Defending Libraries and Librarians in Peterborough

In 2025, following a short-sighted budget decision from Peterborough City Council, three specialist librarians were slated to be laid off at the Peterborough Public Library — and the role of Children's Librarian was set to be eliminated. These cuts were made without public consultation, despite the immense negative impact they would have had on our community — especially families, children, teens, and seniors.

Community Pushback

But the community pushed back. Our Future Peterborough – collectively with many concerned residents, CUPE, and library staff – urged the City to reverse the decision.

In June, we published an open letter that was signed by over 100 celebrated writers, artists, educators, and performers who agreed with us on the indispensable value of libraries and librarians.

Shortly after, the City announced it would be "pausing" the cuts due to community backlash, and a few months later the Library CEO followed up with a plan to reallocate funds and keep all three librarian positions instated.

The Open Letter

Margaret Atwood, Neil Young, Daryl Hannah, Lois Lowry, and Fred Penner were among the over 100 celebrated writers, artists, performers and educators who  signed our open letter on the value of libraries and librarians, urging the City of Peterborough to reverse the cuts.
